  Transcription costing

Basics
Transcription from spoken-word recordings may be charged in one of two ways, either an agreed rate per hour of labour or a fixed price based on duration of the recording. Because every recording is different and there are many variables in content and audio quality that may affect ease of transcription, it is always necessary to discuss costing with specific reference to your project.

If you have been quoted an hourly rate, a very loose rule of thumb is that for each hour of good-quality, two-voice audio you should expect to be charged for approximately three hours of transcription time. Some recordings will take less time to transcribe, others more - insertion of time stamps, for example, will increase the time taken.

You may prefer to work with a fixed charge per audio minute so that you may budget with precision. In these circumstances, we recommend undertaking an initial sample transcription in order to establish a rate appropriate to your particular recording and any special requirements.

Talk to me (phone +618 7122 2731) so that we may work out the best costing structure for your transcription project.

What affects transcription time?
Many things can affect the quality of a recording and influence the ease of transcription down the track. Of course it is not always possible, or even desirable, to control every aspect of the recording environment. But an awareness of factors affecting transcription time may help you keep your costs down. See 'Recording tips' for examples of environmental factors to consider when conducting your interview.
