  Transcription costing

Basics
Oral history transcription or transcription from qualitative field research and other spoken-word recordings is usually charged at an agreed rate per hour of labour. It is more difficult in advance to fix a cost based on duration of the recording, because every recording is different and there are many variables in content and audio quality that may affect ease of transcription.

When preparing your budget, a very loose rule of thumb is that for each hour of recording you should expect approximately three hours of transcription time. Some recordings will take less time to transcribe, others more.

Talk to me (phone +618 7122 2731) so that we may work out the best costing structure for your transcription project.

What affects transcription time?
Many things can affect the quality of a recording and influence the ease of transcription down the track. Of course it is not always possible, or even desirable, to control every aspect of the recording environment. But an awareness of factors affecting transcription time may help you keep your costs down. See 'Recording tips' for examples of environmental factors to consider when conducting your interview.
